WE DID IT! #nzlargestcleanup
Thank you Auckland! More than 1900 volunteers rallied together to clean up 10 kilometers of Manukau's Puhinui Stream - in the process setting the record for the largest number of volunteers in a single environmental clean-up event!
On Saturday 30 April 2016, with the help of the local and and wider community - and in partnership with Auckland Council, our six local boards, Wai Care and Sustainable Coastlines - we made history by bringing together volunteers from across Auckland to clean up the Puhinui Stream.
Starting from Redoubt Road we tackled approximately 10km of stream through Manukau’s industrial and residential areas, removing a whopping 9 tonnes of rubbish and debris from the stream all the way to the foreshore at the Manukau Harbour, and including the Otara Creek.
The clean-up took just a few hours and it was really humbling to see Aucklanders working together for the sake of the environment on such a mass scale.
The volume of litter recovered serves as a wake-up call that we need to clean up and protect our waterways, and not continue to treat them as dumping grounds.
