Manukau in Bloom - School and Pre-school Competitions 2009

This year the Trust ran new competitions for all Manukau schools, pre-school centres and kindergartens. These exciting competitions were run in association with the new Manukau City Council Garden Festival held at the Botanic Gardens on 27-29 March 2009.

The results of the competitions are posted in our 'Current Projects' section.

Ellerslie International Flower Show 2007 - Scarecrow Competition

Once again, the Trust invited primary and intermediate schools throughout the Manukau region to be creative and design and build a 'scarecrow' for the competition at the Ellerslie International Flower Show.

The Ellerslie Flower Show judges were looking for creative and imaginative use of any materials available - recyclable plastics, fabrics, packaging materials - anything was possible.  The scarecrows were proudly displayed in a vegetable and were very popular with the hundreds of visitors to the Flower Show.

Teacher and student representatives from the winning schools were invited to attend the special Mayoral Presentation Ceremony with Mayor Len Brown, at the Flower Show, where they were presented with certificates and prize money.

We would like to acknowledge the following schools for all their hard work in creating their 'scarecrows'and helping to make this year's competition such a success.

'Funky Garden Art Competition 2007'

Following the huge success of the '2006 Scarecrow Competition' for primary and intermediate schools in Manukau, the Ellerslie Flower Show invited us to organise a new competition to include all secondary schools in the Manukau region.

The students are asked to design and create a piece of 'garden art' - this can be made from any material you can source (eg - clay, metal, wood, glass, recyclable materials, living plants, plastic etc) and be of any design.

Our only criteria for the garden art entries are:
1) The finished piece is no larger than 1 metre square
2) It is not reliant on an electricity supply to run during the Flower Show
3) It is able to be transported by Trust staff to the Flower Show, in ONE PIECE or be "simple to construct" on site (instructions to be provided)

The Flower Show judges looked for the most innovative and creative art pieces.

We would like to thank the following schools for their involvement in this new competition-

Beachlands School,Greenmeadows Intermediate, Howick College, Howick Intermediate, Kedgley Intermediate, Papatoetoe High School and Point View School.

Visits With Schools to Discuss Graffiti and Tagging.

Visits With Schools to Discuss Graffiti and Tagging.

We are currently issuing invitations to all our local primary and intermediate schools to allow us to meet and discuss the current graffiti/ tagging problems with groups of year 5/6/7/8 students.

Our aim is to encourage pride, respect and responsibility in the students towards their environment.

These discussions will be supported by a representative from the Police who will give their view on this important issue.

We are inviting groups of students to have some 'hands on' experience in going into their local parks and reserves to paint out tagging.

If you know of a school or group who would be interested in meeting with us, please contact Barbara on 269 4080.
